SafeFood4Children: an interesting new project for choking prevention!


Prochild together with the University of Padova and the Garrahan Pediatric Hospital, has started a major project that aims to protect the health of children and prevent the risk of choking by creating a series of video, realized with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aimed at everyone involved in the preparation of food for children. Video content’s are realized with data provided by the Susy Safe Registry. The videos will soon be available for free and in different languages, on a dedicated website!

Susy Safe and Trenta Ore Per la Vita


Susy Safe and the Italian association “Trenta Ore Per la Vita” are collaborating to reduce choking injuries in children! Prof. Gregori, Susy Safe Project Coordinator and expert on the subject of foreign body injuries in children, participates along with other colleagues in this collaboration. The main objective is the prevention of choking injuries through the dissemination of information and training of essential life-saving skills. The article: “Preventing childhood injuries” talks about the Susy Safe Project. Prof. Gregori explains that the list of potentially dangerous objects and foods for a child is long and: «Unfortunately there is no specific legislation on this issue nor a mandatory training of personnel. Yet understanding that the surveillance of the phenomenon can save lives and minimize the possible disability, as well as lowering social costs, is essential».

Prof Gregori, as Susy Safe Project Coordinator, is part of an important team of Italian experts on choking injuries in children. Team’s purpose is to provide a starting point for the development of a new law to prevent more deaths: "There is the need for a legislation that can enable our society to be capable of supporting life. There is no time to lose, children continue to die and we can no longer say that "it was inevitable" ... a team of heterogeneous experts - aware of the importance of active participation in political life - is available to support the legislative work and give explanations on the various aspects related to these injuries. "

Is it appropriate to use the term “accident” when speaking of preventable injuries? BMJ bans “accidents”


Today we would like to share this interesting article about the use of the term accident. Here a short extract: “An accident is often understood to be unpredictable—a chance occurrence or an “act of God”—and therefore unavoidable. However, most injuries and their precipitating events are predictable and preventable. That is why the BMJ has decided to ban the word accident”.

The Threat of the Foreign Bodies in the Upper Aero Digestive Tract:
Evidence from the Susysafe Project.

On Tuesday 27 March 2007 will take place in Brussels the Susysafe Workshop. It will be a one day workshop targeted at the professionals from the ORL medical field as well as the regulatory commissions and the consumer associations across EU and beyond. Results from the Susysafe Project will be presented and a round table regarding the issue of foreign bodies will take place.
